Kawałki | Bits and pieces

sunflowers

I was just about to write that I’m going through a crisis and don’t feel like doing anything but my brother found the camera cable I’d misplaced, and then the sun came out and suddenly it turned out I feel like doing things after all.

the nameless sleeves

I feel like making another Extreme Makeover cardigan; the sleeves are ready and I’ve cast on for the main body, I just need two large buttons, preferably wooden ones. (I’m also halfway through writing up the pattern for the green cardi, but I got stuck at the neckline – no idea how I’d made it so it might take a while.)

I feel like taking part in the children’s clothes sewing challenge, this one; I don’t really have time for this but it’s only one hour a day – not much, and I really like the idea. And I feel like putting on that dress that I finished last month and never had a chance to wear so far.

blue sky

Chce mi się pojechać w góry i wystawiać twarz do słońca i łapać wiatr we włosy.

I feel like taking a train to the mountains and putting my face in the sun and feeling the wind in my hair.

F

I chce mi się spotykać z czteromiesięcznym Franusiem.

And I feel like spending a lot of time with a certain four-month-old Franciszek.

Idealne wyczucie czasu | Perfect timing

olive oil 1

While in my mind summer begins on Corpus Christi, it always ends on the parish festival, which usually falls on the last Sunday of August. This is of course because of school which already looms on the horizon (not on mine anymore, but it’s in the air anyway). The golden sunrays at the calvary, bells ringing, my best clothes, sweet gingerbreads, colourful stalls – you had to take it in with all your senses because it might be the last warm sunny day that you don’t have to watch from inside the classroom.

Yesterday’s festival decided on its own it was time for the summer to end. The morning temperature was between six and eight degrees, it started raining midway through the high mass, and the afternoon sun didn’t manage to warm the atmosphere up. It’s again cold and rainy today, so I’m glad to have finished my green cardigan on time.

It is undoubtedly a success that I didn’t run out of yarn, and that the cardi is not too small, which I have secretly feared all the time. Fine, it could be this one centimetre wider, and the sleeves might be two centimetres longer... but these are unimportant details. (Though I think I should have begun the ribbing pattern a little higher, I’ve got the impression that it’s making my body look shorter.)

The yarn is beautiful: thick, incredibly soft, and in a lovely, olive-oil-green shade. The softness might as well mean it’s not very durable, but that’s something I can’t know yet – ask me in a few months.

As you may recall, the cardigan is part of my Extreme Makeover project – filling the gap in my wardrobe with clothes for cool weather. The cardi was supposed to be versatile and warm, and it is. That white skirt in the photos is also part of the project – wearing a woollen skirt on the 29th of August, terrible. My friend told me yesterday how everybody laughed at her last year, when she’d bought winter romper suits for her children already in September. She said she had enough time only to wash them and put them in the closet for one week – the first snow fell in October. Do you think we’re in for such adventures this year as well?

Szpilki | Pins

blocking

I have kept silent all the week as I was busy sewing and knitting. Now it’s the pins that are busy, some holding the green cardigan for the blocking, some holding the hem of my new dress, and I’ve finally got some time to read or perfect the making of croissants, which have lately become my obsession....

Ściągacz | The ribbing

Do you know which is my favourite part in knitting a sweater? Knitting the ribbing on the sleeve. Or a sock, that would be the same thing. There is something perfect about the ribbing – its stiff form, those parallel lines, the fact that it bends by itself.

a perfect ribbing

I będzie miał dużo ściągaczy.

As you can see, I’ve started another cardigan; actually I’m halfway through the second sleeve, so “started” is probably not the best word here, but never mind. It will be as green as olive oil. And it will have a lot of ribbing.

Desperacja | Desperation

Grey cardi 1

Sometimes it’s a long and winding way from the idea to the finished object. It was so with this cardigan – the idea was born out of a sudden need for warmth and the initial phase of buying yarn and choosing the pattern was rather short; the problems started right after that. It took me a lifetime to knit the ribbing, then as you know I had to rip and reknit it, shortly: this wasn’t the easiest sweater to make. But it was worth it.

Model | Pattern: DROPS 109-52

It’s obvious right away that I’ve made some changes. The first one was to make it all in grey, leaving out the sock yarn. I feared it might be impossible to find a matching yarn, but I also think it is more versatile this way.

Grey cardi 2

Druga zmiana to oczywiście guziki.

The second change is with the buttons. After I tried it on, it turned out that the cardigan is a bit too tight; blocking helped to make it a bit bigger, but still not big enough for buttoning it all the way down, so I only sewed the buttons on the yoke. Aren’t they perfect?

Grey cardi 4

This was my first cardigan with a yoke like that and I have to say it is a convenient way to deal with the construction issues, but I think I still prefer it the other way, with the sleeves sewn in. But the basic idea of the sweater turned out to be very simple, I might try to knit another one with the yoke in colourwork one day...

Grey cardi 5

A włóczki zużyłam niewiele ponad 250 gramów!

My final comment is that the cardigan is really comfortable and nice to wear and I like it a lot. If you’re looking for an easy, classic (but let’s be honest, quite time-consuming) cardigan, this might be the one. And the yarn was lovely as usual – it only took about 250 gram to make the sweater!

Extreme Makeover: Dajda Edition

Swego czasu pasjami oglądaliśmy Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Wraz z amerykańskimi projektantami i rodzinami, którym budowali nowe domy, płakaliśmy rzewnymi łzami i z podziwem oglądaliśmy domy po przemianie. Dzisiaj pora na mnie. Będę przemieniającym i przemienianym jednocześnie, a przemieniać będę ni mniej ni więcej, tylko moją szafę.

Some time ago we used to watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition passionately. Together with American designers and the families they made their homes over for we would be moved to tears and admire the made-over houses. Now it’s my turn. I’ll be the one who makes and is made over at the same time, and it will be my wardrobe that this makeover will all be about.

the grey cardi - almost done

I’ve mentioned my clothing problems before – no clothes suitable for layering up. Here’s the first step to improve the situation: a cardigan. Thanks to FIFA World Cup, my daily knitting time has extended by twice forty-five minutes plus the half-time break, and the additional time. The result, as you can see, is that the grey cardigan is almost ready: I just need to seam the underarm openings, block it and find the right buttons. And yesterday I got a packet with cotton yarn for two more cardigans – one cream and more formal, the other more casual, olive green. Plus some light yellow yarn for I don’t yet know what.
