Skarpetki dla Isabel | Socks for Isabel

bird tracks

We had problems with electricity supply last week. No electricity when we needed it most. It was cold and dark and I couldn’t think of holding anything but something warm, like a mug of tea or some yarn. And so first I finished the socks, and then the Long Engagement.

socks 1

Model | Pattern: 108-37 Socks with cables in 2 threads ”Alpaca”

The socks are a little shorter than the original, the reason being of course I didn’t have enough yarn, but also: who needs socks that long anyway? The purple yarn is the one I’d brought from Brussels two years ago. I remember asking myself: “all right, the colour is lovely but it’s only two skeins, whatever are you going to make out of it?” Well, it was a perfect sock amount.

socks 2

I also made a pair of sock blockers out of wire coat hangers. It seems blocking your knits may be worth it – the cables and the stitches were evened out beautifully and the socks look perfect now. Towards the end of the week I’m going to pack them and send to England, to my good friend Isabel, and then in January I’m going to go there myself and check if she wears them!

Długie narzeczeństwo pokażę wkrótce, jak będzie okazja, żeby zrobić zdjęcia. A dzisiaj moja siostra Joasia ma urodziny! (Na zdjęciu z siedmiomiesięcznym już Franusiem.)

I’ll show you the Long Engagement as soon as I take any photos. And today is the birthday of my sister Joasia! (Here with Franciszek, 7 months old already.)

Tajemnicze Skarpetki | Mystery Socks

It’s been lovely this week, with the strong mountain wind blowing straight into our faces, tangling into our scarves and our hair, making dogs sniff like crazy and rooks dance in the air, spiralling in large flocks above the city (I love it when they do so – you might know what I’m talking about, if not, watch the Russian film “Night Watch”). The kind of weather that makes me want to walk a thousand miles just to feel the wind press against my body.

mystery socks 1

Because it’s a hot wind, a foehn, the temperature is about 15 degrees, quite unlikely for November and not really the kind of weather for woollen socks. But they’re waiting patiently.

mystery socks 2

Model | Pattern: Mystery Socks 2010
Włóczka | Yarn: Strumpf- und Sportwolle podwójną nitką | held double

Musiałam wprowadzić jedną drobną zmianę – ponieważ robiłam skarpetki z grubszej włóczki niż zalecana, narzuciłąm mniej oczek. Skarpetki nie miały nic przeciwko.

I had to introduce one minor modification – as the yarn I used had a different gauge than the pattern suggested, I cast on fewer stitches. The socks didn’t mind.

Plan na dzisiaj: upiec ciasto, wyprać ubrania, posprzątać łazienkę, zrobić coś z tegorocznej pigwy, uporządkować papiery, obejrzeć film. Mniej więcej w tej kolejności. Miłego weekendu!

The plan for today: make a cake, wash my clothes, clean the bathroom, make something out of this year’s quinces, put my papers in order, watch a film. More or less in that order. Enjoy your weekend!

Idealne wyczucie czasu | Perfect timing

olive oil 1

While in my mind summer begins on Corpus Christi, it always ends on the parish festival, which usually falls on the last Sunday of August. This is of course because of school which already looms on the horizon (not on mine anymore, but it’s in the air anyway). The golden sunrays at the calvary, bells ringing, my best clothes, sweet gingerbreads, colourful stalls – you had to take it in with all your senses because it might be the last warm sunny day that you don’t have to watch from inside the classroom.

olive oil 2

Yesterday’s festival decided on its own it was time for the summer to end. The morning temperature was between six and eight degrees, it started raining midway through the high mass, and the afternoon sun didn’t manage to warm the atmosphere up. It’s again cold and rainy today, so I’m glad to have finished my green cardigan on time.

olive oil 3

It is undoubtedly a success that I didn’t run out of yarn, and that the cardi is not too small, which I have secretly feared all the time. Fine, it could be this one centimetre wider, and the sleeves might be two centimetres longer... but these are unimportant details. (Though I think I should have begun the ribbing pattern a little higher, I’ve got the impression that it’s making my body look shorter.)

olive oil 4

The yarn is beautiful: thick, incredibly soft, and in a lovely, olive-oil-green shade. The softness might as well mean it’s not very durable, but that’s something I can’t know yet – ask me in a few months.

olive oil 5

As you may recall, the cardigan is part of my Extreme Makeover project – filling the gap in my wardrobe with clothes for cool weather. The cardi was supposed to be versatile and warm, and it is. That white skirt in the photos is also part of the project – wearing a woollen skirt on the 29th of August, terrible. My friend told me yesterday how everybody laughed at her last year, when she’d bought winter romper suits for her children already in September. She said she had enough time only to wash them and put them in the closet for one week – the first snow fell in October. Do you think we’re in for such adventures this year as well?

Desperacja | Desperation

Grey cardi 1

Sometimes it’s a long and winding way from the idea to the finished object. It was so with this cardigan – the idea was born out of a sudden need for warmth and the initial phase of buying yarn and choosing the pattern was rather short; the problems started right after that. It took me a lifetime to knit the ribbing, then as you know I had to rip and reknit it, shortly: this wasn’t the easiest sweater to make. But it was worth it.

Grey cardi 3

Model | Pattern: DROPS 109-52

It’s obvious right away that I’ve made some changes. The first one was to make it all in grey, leaving out the sock yarn. I feared it might be impossible to find a matching yarn, but I also think it is more versatile this way.

Grey cardi 2

Druga zmiana to oczywiście guziki.

The second change is with the buttons. After I tried it on, it turned out that the cardigan is a bit too tight; blocking helped to make it a bit bigger, but still not big enough for buttoning it all the way down, so I only sewed the buttons on the yoke. Aren’t they perfect?

Grey cardi 4

This was my first cardigan with a yoke like that and I have to say it is a convenient way to deal with the construction issues, but I think I still prefer it the other way, with the sleeves sewn in. But the basic idea of the sweater turned out to be very simple, I might try to knit another one with the yoke in colourwork one day...

Grey cardi 5

A włóczki zużyłam niewiele ponad 250 gramów!

My final comment is that the cardigan is really comfortable and nice to wear and I like it a lot. If you’re looking for an easy, classic (but let’s be honest, quite time-consuming) cardigan, this might be the one. And the yarn was lovely as usual – it only took about 250 gram to make the sweater!

Arabela

Arabela 1

Kiedy okręcał go wokół palca, przenosił ją w inne miejsce. Czy jakoś tak.

A considerable part of my childhood memories are films or fragments of films that we saw as children. One of my favourites was a Czechoslovakian film called Arabela. I don’t remember much – there was a bearded king, a raven, some wizard, and there was Arabela. Arabela had a magical ring. When she turned it around her finger, it transported her to some other place. Or something like that.

Arabela 2

As I wrote before, the shawl was knitted in two parts: the triangle in stocking stitch first (one skein), and the lace border second (another skein). I’m proud of myself to have thought of that.

Arabela - lace border

The shawl was nice and easy to knit and even though the weather seems to be improving (despite that volcanic ash cloud), I’m planning on wearing it a lot, even more so as I love the colour, especially paired with white.

Życzę wszystkim słonecznego weekendu!

Have a sunny weekend everyone!

Kalajoki

I carried the sock in-the-making with me and tried knitting it in cafés and other public places. The experiment showed that this is not something for me. I just couldn’t concentrate on the pattern, and also – how do you try on your socks for length in public?

Kalajoki socks 1

So I just kept carrying them with me until the weather got warmer and I no longer really needed them, and yesterday I sat down and finished both the socks very quickly.

Kalajoki socks 2

Model Pattern: Kalajoki Socks

Model jest moim zdaniem piękny. Niby prosta rzecz: tu dodawać, tam odejmować, a jakie to efektowne.

I think the pattern is beautiful. A simple thing: adding and reducing stitches, but it looks so nice. I followed the pattern and only made the socks a bit tighter. Knitting the right socks involved frogging about two, or maybe even three times, the last time when it was nearly done. It was worth it – they’re too long for Zosia but just perfect for me. And I have to say I like the socks most inside out!

Życzę wszystkim udanego weekendu, niech nam świeci słońce i wieje wiosenny wietrzyk!

Have a great weekend everybody, full of sunshine and the spring breeze!

Dwie wieże | The Two Towers

No to patrzcie na moje dwie wieże.

The Two Towers were on TV yesterday and I just couldn’t help myself – but frankly, can you? Somehow I’ve seen this part the least times out of all the three so I watched it with a clear conscience, at the same time finishing my socks. I remember the reactions after the movie opened: that it’s too gloomy, much worse than the first part. Take a look at my two towers then.

The Two Towers 1

Model Pattern: Primavera

The analogy is obvious, these socks are a painful epitome of ugliness and hopelessness. It’s not the fault of the pattern which is a nice and very easy one (perfect for a first-time sock knitter). I just can’t force myself to like the colour of this yarn, that’s it. Just like Tolkien’s two towers – built as something good only to be seized by evil. I find this analogy very funny and I had a great time arranging the set for the photo – let’s say it’s the ruins of Osgiliath.

The Two Towers 2

I wiecie co? Mam jeszcze 1,5 motka tej włóczki. Aaaaaa!

And you know what? There's still 1,5 skein of this yarn left! Aaaaaa!

Aaaaa!

Gloves 2

The gloves grew out of a sudden yearning for warmth. I’ve never knit gloves before, being sure it’s something that requires considerable knitting experience and is rather complicated – all those fingers, and people saying, “I’m glad these have no thumb.” It seems after all it isn’t so bad.

Gloves 3

The knitting instructions were clearly written so I just knit as they told me to and it turned out right. The only changes I made were: casting on fewer stitches, knitting a longer ribbing (I prefer it that way) and generally knitting the gloves shorter – they reach up to Zosia’s elbows but my arms are a bit longer.

Gloves 4

The best part was winding the yarn. It wasn’t until after Mum and I had wound it into a nice ball that I realised it’s probably too thin and I’d have to knit the gloves with double thread.

Gloves 5

Rękawiczki są ładne, miękkie (wiadomo, merynos) i ciepłe. Pełna satysfakcja!

The gloves look nice, they’re soft and warm. I’m completely satisfied!

A teraz idę piec ostatnie pierniki. Życzę wszystkim miłego wieczoru!

Now I’m off to bake the last part of gingerbreads. Have a nice evening everyone!

Moebius

Here it is: maths expressed through wool. The knitting was quick, simple but not boring, and required no shaping or measuring. I just cast on and knit till I ran out of yarn.

My Moebius shawl

The original idea was to use up the yarn I had left from my elegant vintage sweater and make a quick shawl that could be easily carried around and help me keep warm when I need it (which practically means: all the time). I’m only telling that to you, so listen carefully and keep it to yourself: it didn’t quite work out that way.

Full frontal view

Dobrze, wyszedł szal i zużyłam całą wełnę.

All right, it is a shawl, and it did use all the wool. But it’s just a bit too large so I had to find a brooch to pin it and keep in place; and at the same time it turned out I didn’t have that much wool after all and so it’s a bit too narrow.

Oh dear ;]

Wiecie, co jest w tym dobre? Wcale mnie to nie zmartwiło.

You know what the good thing is? I really don’t mind.

Triangular back

The rib and cables combination looks fine, as does the not-quite-expected angular effect – I thought I’d spice it up a bit by increasing at one end and decreasing at the other. What I’d forgotten was that this would affect the whole structure of the shawl and turn those ends into triangles, which after all looks even better and is great as far as protection from the cold goes.

Moebius front

The other thing is, I don’t think I will wear it as a shawl after all because the Moebius turned out to be just a perfect scarf. Unlike my other scarves, it doesn’t unwind by itself – the brooch is there just to keep the loose parts together. I know now why everybody seems to have ditched the scarves for neckwarmers.

A better version

I had to frog most of what I’d knit of the green beret today because I underestimated the size of my head. Anyway, I don’t think it will take long to complete it and then I’m planning to switch back to spinning for a little while.
***
At the top on your right you’ve got an Advent calendar. I tried to find something readymade but there was nothing to choose from so I came up with this – a photo a day. We’ll see if I can make it!

Socktoberfest 2009

Knitting along with the TTL KAL was so much fun! It’s just a pair of socks, identical with at least 543 other pairs (so many on Ravelry), but they came out so lovely I no longer care if I can ever think of a reasonable way to wear them.

Model Pattern: Mystery Socks, Through the Loops

One of the socks was knit on DPNs, the other on circular needles. I don’t know why but I preferred the latter way – I had the impression of being more in control of what was going on with all those stitches.

Both socks are the same except for the top part. I had this idea to try and turn the pattern so that it will go in a different direction on each sock.

I enjoyed the leaf pattern a lot, and how the stitches kept moving even though there was no cabling involved, and that it was so easy to follow and somehow in spite of that looks as if it were complicated enough.

A moja ulubiona część skarpetek to palce. Dwa liście kończące motyw pionowy i kanciastość tej całej geometrii – piękne.

And my favourite part of the sock is the toe part, with the two leaves at the end of the vertical motive, and the rather angular look all this geometry gives to the toes. Beautiful.

In fact, I enjoyed the knitting so much, and the actual socks are so nice to wear, that I’ve begun to consider knitting a pair of tights!

***

Thanks to everybody for voting in the poll! The results clearly show that you prefer knitting to cake and I’m happy you do. It’s not that I don’t like baking, but if I’d wanted a baking blog, I would have started one. As there were also a few voices for the cake, so there’ll be some cake from time to time.

And now that October is over and November has come, we can move on to some more substantial knitting. There’s cables coming on – stay tuned!

One of the reasons there’s been no knitting here recently is that I didn’t really feel like showing what was on my needles.

Mom asked me to knit another Gail, this time for her friend, and, much as I like the pattern itself, I seriously disliked the yarn (some artificial fibre in white, blue and purple) and what follows, I didn’t have much heart for this shawl. I managed to finish it yesterday and it looks fine, which proves you can be totally unenthusiastic about a project and still manage to make something nice!

I want this blog to be a no-whine place, so I’ll say no more about my feelings and just give you the facts. First, I’ve absolutely no idea what the yarn is. I got it from an aunt (in a gigantic pack with other yarns, most of which were wool and acrylic, so we seized the first opportunity to pass them on) and it had no labels whatsoever.

The shawl is a bit bigger than the last one, and it would have been even bigger, only the yarn would not block properly. Still, it is large enough to be comfortably worn.

So now I’m finally free to indulge in something as pleasant as knitting a mystery sock in yellow cotton. For organisation purposes I’m calling it “A Ray of Sunlight.”
