Skromne początki Desperacji | Humble beginnings of Desperation

To może na początek skromne początki wiosny?

How about humble beginnings of spring for a start?

Lilies of the valley

Spring may well be here but the temperatures, especially in the morning, are decidedly unlike late April. On Wednesday, I spent twenty unpleasant minutes waiting for a delayed bus and wearing only a light jacket, a not warm enough skirt, no beret or gloves, with a sweater I borrowed from my sister being the only thing that kept me from freezing to death. The cold wind was blowing right through me, and as I was sitting there, I kept concentrating on the thing I had in my bag: three skeins of the gray woollen yarn Kashmir that I’d bought on my way from the previous bus stop. It was a desperate and impulsive purchase, the result of having, earlier that day, analysed my wardrobe and finding nothing there that would resemble a versatile cardigan. Which is shortly going to change, as I’m making the Kashmir into this.

Tylko najpierw muszę nabrać 416 oczek.

I just need to cast on those 416 stitches.

Arabela

Arabela 1

Kiedy okręcał go wokół palca, przenosił ją w inne miejsce. Czy jakoś tak.

A considerable part of my childhood memories are films or fragments of films that we saw as children. One of my favourites was a Czechoslovakian film called Arabela. I don’t remember much – there was a bearded king, a raven, some wizard, and there was Arabela. Arabela had a magical ring. When she turned it around her finger, it transported her to some other place. Or something like that.

As I wrote before, the shawl was knitted in two parts: the triangle in stocking stitch first (one skein), and the lace border second (another skein). I’m proud of myself to have thought of that.

Arabela - lace border

The shawl was nice and easy to knit and even though the weather seems to be improving (despite that volcanic ash cloud), I’m planning on wearing it a lot, even more so as I love the colour, especially paired with white.

Życzę wszystkim słonecznego weekendu!

Have a sunny weekend everyone!

Terapia kolorami | Colour therapy

My breakfast

Today it’s been a week since I’ve started a diet for my skin problems. Just before Easter I went to see a nutritionist and she prepared a special diet for me to follow – a light meal every two or four hours and no sugar or chocolate (!). At the beginning I had the impression I wasn’t really eating differently than I did before, but as the days passed I started to see how much I had actually eaten, in terms of quantities and of calories as well. Now that I’m following the diet for every day, I have suddenly gained control over what I’m eating. And today at breakfast I’ve realised that what I like in this diet is that it’s turned out very much something of a colour therapy, with the greenness of salad, cucumbers, zucchini and spinach, the redness of tomatoes and peppers, the whiteness of milk, yoghurt, cheese and buttermilk. I’m enjoying it tremendously.

An update on my knitting: I’m nearly finishing a triangular shawl. The yarn is the red one I bought in Brussels – I’d thought there was only one skein, but apparently I brought two. I love the colour, which is an amaranth red that somehow seems exceptionally difficult to be caught in photos. Of course there was the usual problem (“what if I run out of yarn?”) which I solved in a way I’m so far very proud of – I started knitting the triangle from the corner out to the edge and knit until the first skein finished, and then I picked up stitches along the side edges for a lace edging. The weather is still for layering, so there are high chances I’ll yet get to wear the shawl this spring!

. . .

10 IV 2010

Planowałam napisać wesoły, kolorowy wpis o wiosennych kwiatkach w naszym ogrodzie i o mojej nowej czerwonej robótce.
Ale rano włączyłam radio i usłyszałam o katastrofie w Smoleńsku, o śmierci Prezydenta i tylu innych osób. Senator Krystyna Bochenek mieszkała dwa domy ode mnie. Jestem głęboko wstrząśnięta.

Niech spoczywają w spokoju.

I had planned to write a cheerful, colourful post about the spring flowers in our garden and my new red knitting project.
Instead I turned the radio on in the morning only to learn about the tragedy in Smolensk. We lost the President and so many important people. Among those who were killed is the senator Krystyna Bochenek, who lived two houses away from me. I am deeply shocked.

May they rest in peace.
