O ubraniach | Of clothes

Definicja okropnego dnia?

A definition of a terrible day? How about: not being able to get up because you sit up until midnight reading a romantic-story-thriller (I know, it’s my own fault, but I simply love Nicholas Sparks’ novels; once I start reading one, I can’t make myself to put it down); then travelling to the uni (one hour), managing to get everything done the way you planned, surprisingly, in just half an hour, then travelling back to Katowice (all the time with the book in hand) and giving in to the temptation of McDonald’s ice-cream, feeling even more immersed in the American setting as you sit there at the counter and keep reading (all right, that particular part was nice); then coming back home, having lunch, checking e-mails and suddenly realising the thing that’s been disturbing you for about half an hour is a developing into a migraine; half-consciously you decide to lie down for a minute and wait till it passes, but the pain grows steadily up to the point where it’s the only thing you’re aware of; you doze off not even knowing when or how, only to be woken up in a painful way by your, otherwise lovely, House M.D. mobile phone tune (thinking, “oh dear, I forgot to mute the mobile for the night”); it’s your piano teacher, calling to confirm the Monday lesson, but you’re hardly able to follow what she’s saying because the headache is back; you realize it’s 4:15 p.m. and there’s no way you can make it to the aerobics class today, and also, that the nap didn’t help much; so after a nearly three hours’ migraine you finally decide to take a painkiller and then wait another hour and a half until it starts to work.

So much for the introduction. What I actually want to share with you is a blog I found after the headache had finally gone away. It’s called Makeshift and it documents a project in which the blogger is wearing only the things she’s made herself. I love the idea, partly because I love the very idea of making things yourself, and of course partly because I make not all, but most of my clothes myself. It’s something I’m quite proud of, and also a possibility I’m very thankful for – of course there are things such as tights, underwear or cotton t-shirts that I can’t make myself, but a recent visit to a couple of clothes shops made me feel very sorry for the people who can’t sew and have to buy the clothes those shops offer. I really only liked a few things among the hundreds displayed, and the only thing (shorts) I considered buying cost twice as much as it was worth. Not to mention the issue I keep discussing with my Mom now and again, that is: who needs all those light summer clothes when the weather is so cool? I’m glad I can sew and knit and so can make myself a cardigan or a skirt when I need it and the way I want it!

Desperacja | Desperation

Grey cardi 1

Sometimes it’s a long and winding way from the idea to the finished object. It was so with this cardigan – the idea was born out of a sudden need for warmth and the initial phase of buying yarn and choosing the pattern was rather short; the problems started right after that. It took me a lifetime to knit the ribbing, then as you know I had to rip and reknit it, shortly: this wasn’t the easiest sweater to make. But it was worth it.

Model | Pattern: DROPS 109-52

It’s obvious right away that I’ve made some changes. The first one was to make it all in grey, leaving out the sock yarn. I feared it might be impossible to find a matching yarn, but I also think it is more versatile this way.

Druga zmiana to oczywiście guziki.

The second change is with the buttons. After I tried it on, it turned out that the cardigan is a bit too tight; blocking helped to make it a bit bigger, but still not big enough for buttoning it all the way down, so I only sewed the buttons on the yoke. Aren’t they perfect?

This was my first cardigan with a yoke like that and I have to say it is a convenient way to deal with the construction issues, but I think I still prefer it the other way, with the sleeves sewn in. But the basic idea of the sweater turned out to be very simple, I might try to knit another one with the yoke in colourwork one day...

A włóczki zużyłam niewiele ponad 250 gramów!

My final comment is that the cardigan is really comfortable and nice to wear and I like it a lot. If you’re looking for an easy, classic (but let’s be honest, quite time-consuming) cardigan, this might be the one. And the yarn was lovely as usual – it only took about 250 gram to make the sweater!

Extreme Makeover: Dajda Edition

Swego czasu pasjami oglądaliśmy Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Wraz z amerykańskimi projektantami i rodzinami, którym budowali nowe domy, płakaliśmy rzewnymi łzami i z podziwem oglądaliśmy domy po przemianie. Dzisiaj pora na mnie. Będę przemieniającym i przemienianym jednocześnie, a przemieniać będę ni mniej ni więcej, tylko moją szafę.

Some time ago we used to watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition passionately. Together with American designers and the families they made their homes over for we would be moved to tears and admire the made-over houses. Now it’s my turn. I’ll be the one who makes and is made over at the same time, and it will be my wardrobe that this makeover will all be about.

the grey cardi - almost done

I’ve mentioned my clothing problems before – no clothes suitable for layering up. Here’s the first step to improve the situation: a cardigan. Thanks to FIFA World Cup, my daily knitting time has extended by twice forty-five minutes plus the half-time break, and the additional time. The result, as you can see, is that the grey cardigan is almost ready: I just need to seam the underarm openings, block it and find the right buttons. And yesterday I got a packet with cotton yarn for two more cardigans – one cream and more formal, the other more casual, olive green. Plus some light yellow yarn for I don’t yet know what.
