Every time I think I must have seen all the pretty blogs there are, I stumble upon something new. Last time Sweet Paul – the latest issue of his online magazine went live yesterday and I agree with my friend Patrycja that it only lacks one thing: to be printed on glossy paper to hold in your hand and touch.

A dziś znowu coś nowego: Not Without Salt. Piękne zdjęcia i mnóstwo słodyczy. Do oglądania takich rzeczy trzeba sobie zrobić kubek caffe latte i wziąć urlop od wszystkiego.

And today again: Not Without Salt. Pretty photos and lots of sweet things. To look through this properly I need a mug of caffe latte and a week off.

sleeve progress

And just so you don’t say we no longer knit here in Silesia: I dug the corpse of the Long Engagement out of the closet, meaning I frogged the only sleeve I’d made and instead of waiting for the right colour to reappear, went for short sleeves. Should be ready anytime soon.

Powoli | Slowly

written instructions

There are so many things I have to do, and so many thoughts in my head, that I can’t really concentrate on anything unless it’s rather small. Like socks, for example.

Kawałki | Bits and pieces

sunflowers

I was just about to write that I’m going through a crisis and don’t feel like doing anything but my brother found the camera cable I’d misplaced, and then the sun came out and suddenly it turned out I feel like doing things after all.

the nameless sleeves

I feel like making another Extreme Makeover cardigan; the sleeves are ready and I’ve cast on for the main body, I just need two large buttons, preferably wooden ones. (I’m also halfway through writing up the pattern for the green cardi, but I got stuck at the neckline – no idea how I’d made it so it might take a while.)

I feel like taking part in the children’s clothes sewing challenge, this one; I don’t really have time for this but it’s only one hour a day – not much, and I really like the idea. And I feel like putting on that dress that I finished last month and never had a chance to wear so far.

blue sky

Chce mi się pojechać w góry i wystawiać twarz do słońca i łapać wiatr we włosy.

I feel like taking a train to the mountains and putting my face in the sun and feeling the wind in my hair.

F

I chce mi się spotykać z czteromiesięcznym Franusiem.

And I feel like spending a lot of time with a certain four-month-old Franciszek.

Szpilki | Pins

blocking

I have kept silent all the week as I was busy sewing and knitting. Now it’s the pins that are busy, some holding the green cardigan for the blocking, some holding the hem of my new dress, and I’ve finally got some time to read or perfect the making of croissants, which have lately become my obsession....

O szczegółach | Of details

I’ve entered the final phase of the sweater-knitting: I reached the armholes yesterday while watching You’ve Got Mail (don’t you just love that film?) and will probably be moving on to neckline today. If all goes well, I might even finish the sweater before I actually start needing it – quite unusual for me, as I tend to make things I need while I need them.

the edge

Wyrównaj do środka

Some time ago I took part in a survey about knitting that concentrated on the therapeutic aspect and one of the questions was to describe what knitting has taught you. I can’t remember my answer but the question keeps coming back to me every now and again. What I’ve discovered while working on the green cardigan is that knitting has taught me attention to detail. This is not to say I’ve become a perfectionist (all right, I do have those slight neuroses about how I put the dishes to dry, and I tend to freak out if books or magazines are not aligned...), but I’ve simply experienced how important the details are for the final effect. The yearning for neater buttonholes is part of that, as is the quest for a neat seam. And with the green cardigan, I’ve finally achieved the perfect knitting edge – it was a matter of both practice and technique, and now it’s just perfect and I love to look at it.

pink dahlia

Poza sztrikowaniem zaczęłam też idealną sukienkę koszulową (zainspirowaną tą sukienką) z pięknej kremowej bawełny, a wczoraj po południu zrobiłam z różowego filcu broszkę w kształcie dalii.

Apart from knitting, I’ve also begun working on a perfect shirt-dress (inspired by this one) from a lovely cream cotton, and just yesterday afternoon I made a dahlia brooch out of pink felt. Near-perfect, I would say, entertaining to make and just in time, as the dahlias in the garden have begun to bloom. The tutorial is here – go and make one for yourself!

Instrukcja | How-to

My good friend Patrycja wanted to know how I made buttonholes. Here’s how:

step 1

The button band is ten stitches wide, and the buttonholes – four. So I knit the first three stitches and then I make a preliminary step: I slip the fourth stitch onto the right needle, move the yarn from the back to the front around the stitch, and slip the stitch back onto the left needle. Then I turn the piece.

step 2

I leave the yarn as it is and I move to the four buttonhole stitches. I slip the fourth and the fifth stitch onto the left needle and then I pass the fourth stitch over the fifth. I repeat this three times: slip another stitch to the left and pass the left stitch over the right one, until there are only three button band stitches left.

step 3

step 4

Oto efekt: trzy oczka na lewym drucie, następnie cztery zamknięte oczka i znowu trzy oczka na prawym drucie. Teraz trzeba nadrobić te zamknięte.

Here’s what it looks like: three stitches on the left needle, then the four buttonhole stitches, all cast off, and again three stitches on the right needle. Now we have to make up for what we’ve cast off.

step 5

I put the right needle through the third stitch on the left needle and cast on three (only) new stitches, using the yarn that is hanging at the back of the piece. And then Iturn the piece back round and knit until the end of the row, as if nothing happened, and then I knit the next row.

step 6

step 7

A kiedy dochodzę do listwy na guziki, przerabiam trzy pierwsze oczka i oczom moim ukazuje się niepotrzebnie długi kawałek włóczki łączący dziurkę z resztą robótki.

I knit the first three stitches of the button band and see that the bit of yarn which joins the hole to the rest of the piece is way too long.

step 8

But it doesn’t worry me at all, I just wrap this bit of yarn around my needle...

step 9

... i przerabiam z niego to brakujące czwarte oczko.

... and I knit the fourth stitch out of it.

step 10

A potem dalej robię jak leci do końca rzędu, odwracam robótkę i widzę piękną dziurkę na guzik!

And then I knit on until the end of the row, and turn the piece and behold a lovely buttonhole!

step 11

(A sposób jest stąd.)

(The idea comes from here.)

Na żółto | In yellow

Dzisiaj patrzę, a tu mirabelki dojrzewają!

It’s been a while, but it’s holidays after all, isn’t it? From Monday to Wednesday I walked to Częstochowa, to say thank you for some things, and to leave some other things in better hands than mine. I returned with a sore throat, sore feet, sunshine in my heart and a smile on my face. And I’ve noticed today that the mirabelle plums are almost ripe! It’s time to make some jam – I’ve discovered recently that with its lovely golden colour and the combination of tart and sweet it goes great with French croissants.

mirabelles

Powoli wracam też do sztrikowania.

I’m also slowly getting back to knitting. My camera refuses to capture the greenness of the cotton yarn so there are no photos for now, but you can believe me when I say that I’ve already made two buttonholes and, as usual, keep wondering whether I will run out of yarn.

Coś miłego na środę oraz trup | Something nice for Wednesday, and a corpse

Najpierw coś miłego, czy najpierw trup? Chyba najpierw trup.

Which first: something nice or the corpse? Yes, the corpse, I thought so. Well, I ordered my yarn stash yesterday (which means; I got rid of all the acrylic horror, lying there because “I might use it one day”) and in the excavation process I came across the violet sweater that I’d started a year ago and put away half-finished. As I look at it now, I think I might rip and reknit it but I will fight this silly idea, because all that’s left to do is block it, seam in the sleeves and sew on the buttons.

Prune rediscovered

So much for resurrecting corpses. The nice thing for Wednesday is this blog – go and check it out. Lovely.

Znów od początku | From the beginning, again

too many stitches - again!

I’ve noticed I tend to pick up new skills with every new item I knit. The grey cardigan has taught me that it might be better to take the knitting off the needles and try it on while there still is time (even if that means having to pick hundreds of stitches up again) rather than knit on until the end and then start to worry that the thing is too small or too big.

mushrooms

Not a long time after that you can find me already putting this new experience into practice. As you can see, it’s possible to knit a gauge swatch, measure and count everything, and still manage to cast on some thirty stitches too many. Frog and reknit. The good (though unrelated) news is that mushroom fever started yesterday with the first chanterelles and boletes!

Ściągacz | The ribbing

Do you know which is my favourite part in knitting a sweater? Knitting the ribbing on the sleeve. Or a sock, that would be the same thing. There is something perfect about the ribbing – its stiff form, those parallel lines, the fact that it bends by itself.

a perfect ribbing

I będzie miał dużo ściągaczy.

As you can see, I’ve started another cardigan; actually I’m halfway through the second sleeve, so “started” is probably not the best word here, but never mind. It will be as green as olive oil. And it will have a lot of ribbing.

Extreme Makeover: Dajda Edition

Swego czasu pasjami oglądaliśmy Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Wraz z amerykańskimi projektantami i rodzinami, którym budowali nowe domy, płakaliśmy rzewnymi łzami i z podziwem oglądaliśmy domy po przemianie. Dzisiaj pora na mnie. Będę przemieniającym i przemienianym jednocześnie, a przemieniać będę ni mniej ni więcej, tylko moją szafę.

Some time ago we used to watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition passionately. Together with American designers and the families they made their homes over for we would be moved to tears and admire the made-over houses. Now it’s my turn. I’ll be the one who makes and is made over at the same time, and it will be my wardrobe that this makeover will all be about.

the grey cardi - almost done

I’ve mentioned my clothing problems before – no clothes suitable for layering up. Here’s the first step to improve the situation: a cardigan. Thanks to FIFA World Cup, my daily knitting time has extended by twice forty-five minutes plus the half-time break, and the additional time. The result, as you can see, is that the grey cardigan is almost ready: I just need to seam the underarm openings, block it and find the right buttons. And yesterday I got a packet with cotton yarn for two more cardigans – one cream and more formal, the other more casual, olive green. Plus some light yellow yarn for I don’t yet know what.

Owoce długiego weekendu | The outcome of a long weekend

Popatrzcie, ile mogą zdziałać dwa słoneczne dni dla jednego sweterka. Nawet nie wiem kiedy dobrnęłam do karczku.

See how much two sunny days mean for a single sweater. I reached the yoke I don’t even know when.

the grey cardi in progress

Doesn’t it look a bit small? I’m afraid to try it on, it might turn out to be really too small and then I’d have to rip it all and start from the beginning, including the impossible ribbing. I just don’t think I could stand it.

the grey cardi 2

Czuję się cała nagrzana słońcem i omotana wiatrem. Chodziłam dwa dni z gołymi nogami i w letnich sukienkach, i aż przypomniałam sobie, że przecież idą wakacje! Siedzenie w półcieniu i czytanie miłych książek, jeżdżenie na rowerze do lasu, podróże dalekie i bliskie, koktajl truskawkowy i czerwone porzeczki... Najwyższa pora skończyć szary sweterek i zacząć robić coś żółtego. Na razie idę pooglądać jesienno-zimowe DROPSy.

I’m feeling all warmed up by the sun and blown around by the wind. Two bare-legged and summer dressed days made me realize that holidays are coming! Sitting in the half-shade and reading nice books, riding the bike to the forest, travelling far and close, strawberry cocktail and red currants... It’s high time to finish that grey sweater and cast on for something in yellow. And now I’m off to check out the new autumn-winter DROPS collection.

26.5.10

Powrót | Come back

Ha!

Ha! I finished the monstrous ribbing yesterday and could finally switch to larger needles. The weather is still nothing special and, although it should be otherwise, I could still use a woollen cardigan and a couple of narrow skirts – got to make myself some soon.

The monstrous ribbing part 2

Wszystkim Mamom życzę słońca, i dosłownie, i w przenośni.

Have you visited Pinterest yet? It’s utterly addictive but wonderful at the same time, and it doesn’t seem to end.

Błogie lenistwo | Lazy day

In Poland, May begins with at least three days off, with the May Day being a holiday, and 3 May a national and religious holiday. I love this lazy beginning. Yesterday it was hot and sunny, I rode my bike to the city (40 minutes one way – not quite so bad, considering the adverse red lights and half the way being uphill), I baked, played Valancy Stirling by cutting the rambling rose, and played around with the removable macro lens.

Pear blossom

I Lato Muminków do posłuchania. Nie róbmy dzisiaj nic.

But today it’s cool and wet, and rainy, and the weather is just perfect for doing nothing. A mug of tea, a rhubarb financier (I’m on a diet, I know), the neverending ribbing on my needles, or Anne of the Island, or The Blue Castle. Let’s do nothing today.

The neverending ribbing

As for the ribbing, actually there’s about a centimeter more to go, and instead of four hundred stitches I’ve now got some 250, but it feels like I’ll be knitting it until the end of time. The situation should improve once I change the needles one size up. And the rhubarb financiers and the sherbet are exquisite!

Skromne początki Desperacji | Humble beginnings of Desperation

To może na początek skromne początki wiosny?

How about humble beginnings of spring for a start?

Lilies of the valley

Spring may well be here but the temperatures, especially in the morning, are decidedly unlike late April. On Wednesday, I spent twenty unpleasant minutes waiting for a delayed bus and wearing only a light jacket, a not warm enough skirt, no beret or gloves, with a sweater I borrowed from my sister being the only thing that kept me from freezing to death. The cold wind was blowing right through me, and as I was sitting there, I kept concentrating on the thing I had in my bag: three skeins of the gray woollen yarn Kashmir that I’d bought on my way from the previous bus stop. It was a desperate and impulsive purchase, the result of having, earlier that day, analysed my wardrobe and finding nothing there that would resemble a versatile cardigan. Which is shortly going to change, as I’m making the Kashmir into this.

the beginnings of Desperation

Tylko najpierw muszę nabrać 416 oczek.

I just need to cast on those 416 stitches.

Terapia kolorami | Colour therapy

My breakfast

Today it’s been a week since I’ve started a diet for my skin problems. Just before Easter I went to see a nutritionist and she prepared a special diet for me to follow – a light meal every two or four hours and no sugar or chocolate (!). At the beginning I had the impression I wasn’t really eating differently than I did before, but as the days passed I started to see how much I had actually eaten, in terms of quantities and of calories as well. Now that I’m following the diet for every day, I have suddenly gained control over what I’m eating. And today at breakfast I’ve realised that what I like in this diet is that it’s turned out very much something of a colour therapy, with the greenness of salad, cucumbers, zucchini and spinach, the redness of tomatoes and peppers, the whiteness of milk, yoghurt, cheese and buttermilk. I’m enjoying it tremendously.

Budding lilac leaves

An update on my knitting: I’m nearly finishing a triangular shawl. The yarn is the red one I bought in Brussels – I’d thought there was only one skein, but apparently I brought two. I love the colour, which is an amaranth red that somehow seems exceptionally difficult to be caught in photos. Of course there was the usual problem (“what if I run out of yarn?”) which I solved in a way I’m so far very proud of – I started knitting the triangle from the corner out to the edge and knit until the first skein finished, and then I picked up stitches along the side edges for a lace edging. The weather is still for layering, so there are high chances I’ll yet get to wear the shawl this spring!

What is this? A red cardigan, complete but for one sleeve. I ran out of wool exactly as I finished the other one. So now what? I’ve ordered more roving, and then I’ll have to spin it so this long engagement might get even longer.

H&M hairbands

Not a word about the weather today, although it looks like it’s getting a little better. I’ve bought something lovely and colourful to cheer me up.

Kiełkowanie | Sprouting

Za oknem sezon wełniany trwa. Chodzę w zimowej sukience, wełnianych skarpetkach, ciepłych rajtuzach, zimowym płaszczu i zimowej czapce i czekam, tak jak wszyscy ludzie i ptacy, aż będzie można zrzucić z siebie ten nadmiar warstw i zamienić biały z szarym, czerwonym i czarnym na biały z pistacjowym, pudrowym różem albo bladym żółtym.

Outside it’s still the wool season. I keep wearing my winter dress, woollen socks, thick tights, winter coat and winter hat and together with all the other people and birds I’m waiting for the moment to let go all those layers and exchange white with grey, red and black for white with pistachio green, powder pink and mellow yellow.

Spring is coming

Czerwony sweterek rośnie – numer z niewidocznym połączeniem udał się doskonale.

The red cardigan is growing – the crochet cast-on did its job perfectly well.

Spring is coming 2

And as long as I’m at home, with the sun shining at me through the windows, I can pretend to myself spring is already here.

Dobry początek | A good beginning

It seems woollen socks are a useful thing independently of the weather – I’ve been suffering from hay fever since Sunday (it’s terrible, I’m all swollen from the nose to the tongue) and probably because of that my feet are cold again. The grey socks are great, and I’m wearing them on the right and wrong side interchangeably.

Crochet cast-on in my red cardigan

Jeszcze trochę i skończę prawy przód czerwonego sweterka. Jeszcze jakieś 10 cm prawego przodu i zobaczymy.

The right front of my red cardigan is almost done. The way it’s constructed is a continual wonder to me, but I’ve already managed to introduce an improvement: instead of risking a nasty stitch at the middle of the back, I’ve used crochet cast-on so that I can begin the left front where the right front begins. Just some 10 cm more and we’ll see.

And I was woken up in the middle of the night by the full moon; it shined from behind the clouds and glimmered through twigs and generally looked like in Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. I hope your March began as nicely as mine!

Left to right: the back part of the red cardigan, more than a half of a grey sock, a piece of the woollen checked cloth for a long vintage skirt, with a wide waistband and a taffeta ruffle on the lining.

Pieces of what I've been working on

Model (link do Ravelry) znalazłam całkiem przypadkiem i jestem nim zachwycona.

I’ve been neglecting the cardigan recently and knitting a new pair of socks instead (this time they’re in a lovely grey colour), I still feel I haven’t got enough warm socks. I came across this pattern (Rav link) incidentally and I’m loving it. The skirt is already partly cut out, I might get back to sewing it tomorrow.
