Przypadkiem retro cz. I | Accidentally vintage, part one

dress

It’s been such a hectic week for me since Wednesday I don’t think I took the needles once in hand. There are more and more things to do as October is approaching, more things to read, to write, to prepare – it always takes some time before I get used to the new routine, and contrary to the impression this blog might give, knitting is not the top priority in my life, so it naturally gets pushed down. So does sewing; I started an autumn coat for Zosia, but at the moment there’s no stuffed lining in the shops and I have to wait. Instead I’m finally enjoying my new dress and it’s natural vintage look!

Na szaro | In grey

I’ll say nothing about the weather. Not a word. Maybe only that grey clothes are an October, not a September thing.

A jadę jutro w pewne miejsce, którego mieszkanki przez cały rok noszą biały z dodatkiem czarnego. Wam też życzę dobrego tygodnia!

And tomorrow I’m going to a place whose inhabitants wear white with black all year long. Hope you all have a great week, too!

Desperacja | Desperation

Grey cardi 1

Sometimes it’s a long and winding way from the idea to the finished object. It was so with this cardigan – the idea was born out of a sudden need for warmth and the initial phase of buying yarn and choosing the pattern was rather short; the problems started right after that. It took me a lifetime to knit the ribbing, then as you know I had to rip and reknit it, shortly: this wasn’t the easiest sweater to make. But it was worth it.

Grey cardi 3

Model | Pattern: DROPS 109-52

It’s obvious right away that I’ve made some changes. The first one was to make it all in grey, leaving out the sock yarn. I feared it might be impossible to find a matching yarn, but I also think it is more versatile this way.

Grey cardi 2

Druga zmiana to oczywiście guziki.

The second change is with the buttons. After I tried it on, it turned out that the cardigan is a bit too tight; blocking helped to make it a bit bigger, but still not big enough for buttoning it all the way down, so I only sewed the buttons on the yoke. Aren’t they perfect?

Grey cardi 4

This was my first cardigan with a yoke like that and I have to say it is a convenient way to deal with the construction issues, but I think I still prefer it the other way, with the sleeves sewn in. But the basic idea of the sweater turned out to be very simple, I might try to knit another one with the yoke in colourwork one day...

Grey cardi 5

A włóczki zużyłam niewiele ponad 250 gramów!

My final comment is that the cardigan is really comfortable and nice to wear and I like it a lot. If you’re looking for an easy, classic (but let’s be honest, quite time-consuming) cardigan, this might be the one. And the yarn was lovely as usual – it only took about 250 gram to make the sweater!

Owoce długiego weekendu | The outcome of a long weekend

Popatrzcie, ile mogą zdziałać dwa słoneczne dni dla jednego sweterka. Nawet nie wiem kiedy dobrnęłam do karczku.

See how much two sunny days mean for a single sweater. I reached the yoke I don’t even know when.

the grey cardi in progress

Doesn’t it look a bit small? I’m afraid to try it on, it might turn out to be really too small and then I’d have to rip it all and start from the beginning, including the impossible ribbing. I just don’t think I could stand it.

the grey cardi 2

Czuję się cała nagrzana słońcem i omotana wiatrem. Chodziłam dwa dni z gołymi nogami i w letnich sukienkach, i aż przypomniałam sobie, że przecież idą wakacje! Siedzenie w półcieniu i czytanie miłych książek, jeżdżenie na rowerze do lasu, podróże dalekie i bliskie, koktajl truskawkowy i czerwone porzeczki... Najwyższa pora skończyć szary sweterek i zacząć robić coś żółtego. Na razie idę pooglądać jesienno-zimowe DROPSy.

I’m feeling all warmed up by the sun and blown around by the wind. Two bare-legged and summer dressed days made me realize that holidays are coming! Sitting in the half-shade and reading nice books, riding the bike to the forest, travelling far and close, strawberry cocktail and red currants... It’s high time to finish that grey sweater and cast on for something in yellow. And now I’m off to check out the new autumn-winter DROPS collection.

Powrót | Come back

Ha!

Ha! I finished the monstrous ribbing yesterday and could finally switch to larger needles. The weather is still nothing special and, although it should be otherwise, I could still use a woollen cardigan and a couple of narrow skirts – got to make myself some soon.

The monstrous ribbing part 2

Wszystkim Mamom życzę słońca, i dosłownie, i w przenośni.

Have you visited Pinterest yet? It’s utterly addictive but wonderful at the same time, and it doesn’t seem to end.

Błogie lenistwo | Lazy day

In Poland, May begins with at least three days off, with the May Day being a holiday, and 3 May a national and religious holiday. I love this lazy beginning. Yesterday it was hot and sunny, I rode my bike to the city (40 minutes one way – not quite so bad, considering the adverse red lights and half the way being uphill), I baked, played Valancy Stirling by cutting the rambling rose, and played around with the removable macro lens.

Pear blossom

I Lato Muminków do posłuchania. Nie róbmy dzisiaj nic.

But today it’s cool and wet, and rainy, and the weather is just perfect for doing nothing. A mug of tea, a rhubarb financier (I’m on a diet, I know), the neverending ribbing on my needles, or Anne of the Island, or The Blue Castle. Let’s do nothing today.

The neverending ribbing

As for the ribbing, actually there’s about a centimeter more to go, and instead of four hundred stitches I’ve now got some 250, but it feels like I’ll be knitting it until the end of time. The situation should improve once I change the needles one size up. And the rhubarb financiers and the sherbet are exquisite!

Skromne początki Desperacji | Humble beginnings of Desperation

To może na początek skromne początki wiosny?

How about humble beginnings of spring for a start?

Lilies of the valley

Spring may well be here but the temperatures, especially in the morning, are decidedly unlike late April. On Wednesday, I spent twenty unpleasant minutes waiting for a delayed bus and wearing only a light jacket, a not warm enough skirt, no beret or gloves, with a sweater I borrowed from my sister being the only thing that kept me from freezing to death. The cold wind was blowing right through me, and as I was sitting there, I kept concentrating on the thing I had in my bag: three skeins of the gray woollen yarn Kashmir that I’d bought on my way from the previous bus stop. It was a desperate and impulsive purchase, the result of having, earlier that day, analysed my wardrobe and finding nothing there that would resemble a versatile cardigan. Which is shortly going to change, as I’m making the Kashmir into this.

the beginnings of Desperation

Tylko najpierw muszę nabrać 416 oczek.

I just need to cast on those 416 stitches.

Kalajoki

I carried the sock in-the-making with me and tried knitting it in cafés and other public places. The experiment showed that this is not something for me. I just couldn’t concentrate on the pattern, and also – how do you try on your socks for length in public?

Kalajoki socks 1

So I just kept carrying them with me until the weather got warmer and I no longer really needed them, and yesterday I sat down and finished both the socks very quickly.

Kalajoki socks 2

Model Pattern: Kalajoki Socks
Włóczka Yarn: Esslinger Wolle Fortissima

Model jest moim zdaniem piękny. Niby prosta rzecz: tu dodawać, tam odejmować, a jakie to efektowne.

I think the pattern is beautiful. A simple thing: adding and reducing stitches, but it looks so nice. I followed the pattern and only made the socks a bit tighter. Knitting the right socks involved frogging about two, or maybe even three times, the last time when it was nearly done. It was worth it – they’re too long for Zosia but just perfect for me. And I have to say I like the socks most inside out!

Życzę wszystkim udanego weekendu, niech nam świeci słońce i wieje wiosenny wietrzyk!

Have a great weekend everybody, full of sunshine and the spring breeze!

Powierzchnie | Textures

Left to right: the back part of the red cardigan, more than a half of a grey sock, a piece of the woollen checked cloth for a long vintage skirt, with a wide waistband and a taffeta ruffle on the lining.

Pieces of what I've been working on

Model (link do Ravelry) znalazłam całkiem przypadkiem i jestem nim zachwycona.

I’ve been neglecting the cardigan recently and knitting a new pair of socks instead (this time they’re in a lovely grey colour), I still feel I haven’t got enough warm socks. I came across this pattern (Rav link) incidentally and I’m loving it. The skirt is already partly cut out, I might get back to sewing it tomorrow.

Szare i czerwone | Red and grey

It seems I could wear grey accessorised with red 24/7 this autumn. I’ve made a grey coat with a red inset all along the lining. I’m dreaming of a grey cardigan with red elements on the yoke and of grey gloves with a red hem. There’s also some more grey wool waiting to be turned into a dress, and some red that will be a pencil skirt.

But while I can already see all that with my mind’s eye, there’s too much unfinished business lying about to get anything new started. First, there’s Prune, waiting in my knitting basket like a purple pang a conscience. There’s a white and blue version of Gail that I started knitting by the sea and am that close to finishing- there’s not much left, it should be ready to block before tomorrow noon. And finally there’s this sock KAL which I really want to join because I’ve never done anything like this before.

Until all that is finished, I have to make do with this: my red beret (bought in Paris at the foot of the Notre Dame cathedral...), my woodpecker earrings (from here), my absolutely adorable new cotton tights (the ultimate winter tights – warm, textured and grey; can’t wait to wear them) and underneath all that – my autumn coat. Or rather: the woollen tissue for my autumn coat right before I started cutting. Looks nice, doesn’t it?
